Upkeep bouncing bomb

Upkeep bouncing bomb, designed by Barnes Wallis, was engineered to skip across water and detonate against dam walls. It weighed approximately 9,250 lbs (4,200 kg), measured 60 inches in diameter, and carried 6,600 lbs of Torpex explosive. The bomb was deployed from modified Avro Lancasters flying at an altitude of 60 feet and a speed of 220 mph, with a backspin of 425 rpm—a precision challenge demanding exceptional flying skill.
Lancaster ED906 (AJ-J), piloted by Flight Lieutenant David Maltby, played a key role in breaching the Möhne Dam and was subsequently redirected to strike the Edersee Dam, contributing significantly to the mission’s success. The crew, known as “Malta & Crew,” became part of the legendary Dambusters, whose precision and bravery disrupted German war production and reshaped the future of aerial warfare.
