HC MK II 8000 Lb.

8,000-lb HC Bomb Mk II – Operation Gomorrah, July 1943

The 8,000-lb High Capacity (HC) Bomb Mk II was a British blast weapon designed for maximum destructive effect against urban and industrial targets. It featured a thin-walled steel casing to allow for a high explosive filling ratio, typically Amatol comprising up to 70% of total weight. The bomb was constructed in two cylindrical sections joined by a bolted flange.
Fuzing was achieved via a nose-mounted 3 Pitols No. 44 Mk I The pistol provided instantaneous detonation on impact, maximizing blast radius before incendiaries were deployed.
The Mk II was carried exclusively by Avro Lancaster bombers, which could accommodate its large size in their bomb bays. During Operation Gomorrah, Hamburg, July 1943 in July 1943, the bomb was used to flatten buildings and expose interiors.
